About

QoS has been set up by a group of experienced Sydney-based artists, divers, ocean lovers and environmentalists.

Our member base consists of scuba and free divers, artists from vastly diverse disciplines and communities, activists, marine scientists and academics. We also invite anyone with even a remote interest to know more about our planet's vast marine realms and gain deeper awareness of conservation needs and strategies being undertaken, locally and globally, to reconnect humanity with our liquid inner space.

QoS promotes diverse modes of marine environmental and climate change communication and collaborations between artists and environmental scientists. In celebrating difference (rather than indifference) we seek ways in which artists (dancers / choreographers, musicians, theatre makers, film makers, writers, visual and digital artists, installation artists and sculptors), can communicate pressing environmental concerns as well as celebrating the infinite beauty within our aqua world as we approach an increasingly uneasy future. As a community with shared interests we aim to break down the isolation many people feel around so many urgent and complex marine environmental matters.

Information for New-Comers

You are welcome here!

We are very conscious of being inclusive of everyone in our group - we’re a very sensitive collective of people who care about the environment and one another.

If you’ve never dived before, a good place to start is hiring a mask+snorkel, fins and a wetsuit and come free-diving with us, or just come along and hang out at the beach and meet the group.

If transport’s an issue, get in touch and we’ll see if we can organise a car-pool.

We usually prepare with yoga and/or breathing exercises to tune into our bodies and calm the mind before heading into the water. Inexperienced divers are always part of a group that includes more confident divers, and we make sure to take things at a pace that everybody present is comfortable with.

We’re certainly able to discuss the development of diving skills, as well as equipment and other needs - don’t hesitate to ask!

We don’t charge people to come along to any of the gatherings, however depending on the dive, costs may include paying for a boat (for boat dives), hiring gear, travel and accomodation. If you DO want to contribute a donation to Weird Nest, we’d be very grateful!
